Aeria Games and IAHGames Select BitTorrent DNA™ to Accelerate Downloads of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs)
San Francisco, CA, September 15, 2008 – BitTorrent, the global standard technology for the delivery of rich media on the Internet, today announced that it has partnered with Aeria Games, a dynamic gaming community, and IAHGames, a major provider of online entertainment software and services. Aeria and IAHGames are the latest companies to integrate BitTorrent’s Delivery Network Accelerator (DNA) content delivery service to ensure the fast, efficient and reliable distribution of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) and patches.
“By adopting the BitTorrent DNA content delivery service, we have increased the percentage of successful downloads of our game clients and patches while saving on bandwidth costs,” said David Ng, deputy chief executive officer of IAHGames. “It plugs right into our existing infrastructure, giving us a greater degree of control over how we distribute our titles with reliability and efficiency.”
The BitTorrent DNA content delivery service is targeted at the needs of commercial content publishers including video game developers and distributors such as Aeria Games and IAHGames, as well as media companies and software providers. Through many years of networking innovation, BitTorrent DNA allows content publishers to harness a vast global resource of user-contributed bandwidth.
Specifically for the online gaming community, BitTorrent provides fast downloads for MMOG clients and patches, all the while preserving an uninterrupted gaming experience. For instance, BitTorrent DNA is able to automatically detect game play on a user’s system and through BitTorrent’s advanced proprietary congestion control technology eliminates any impact on game play as well as other sensitive real-time applications including Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, streaming media, or Internet browsing. As a network-friendly technology, BitTorrent DNA is not subject to existing Internet Service Provider (ISP) network protocol management techniques that threaten all open-source BitTorrent implementations.
“As the fastest growing free-to-play gaming community, Aeria Games is focused on providing the best community gaming experience to all of our players worldwide,” said Terry Ngo, chief technology officer at Aeria Games. “In realizing that vision, it’s critical that we employ the best content delivery service as part of our networking infrastructure. BitTorrent DNA gives us the ability to continue rapidly building our online gaming community, offer the best free games, all the while significantly improving the end-user experience.”
BitTorrent DNA works seamlessly with any pre-existing web infrastructure, such as content delivery networks (CDNs), to guarantee a publisher’s required delivery quality of service (QoS). This peer network acceleration dramatically improves the speed and reliability of content delivery. BitTorrent DNA also easily integrates into any existing downloader and installer applications utilizing minimal computing resources and a very small client footprint. Since BitTorrent DNA is based on the world’s most popular BitTorrent client installed on over 170 million devices globally, it is tested and proven consumer technology.
“BitTorrent is proud to be working with leaders in the massively multiplayer online gaming space such as Aeria and IAHGames. BitTorrent DNA thrives in this environment by giving online game distributors an ability to manage user-contributed bandwidth, boost delivery performance and enhance the end-user experience,” said Eric Klinker, chief technology officer of BitTorrent, Inc. “With BitTorrent’s advanced congestion control technology and game-play detection features, DNA ensures that gamers won’t have to suffer any delays or breaks in their game play while simultaneously downloading the latest software patch.”
BitTorrent will be exhibiting at Booth #718 at the Austin Game Developers’ Conference (GDC) taking place September 15-17, 2008 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas.
